The Rim Lakes Recreation Area, which includes 8 campgrounds and 2 day use areas, is nestled on the Mogollon Rim. The Mogollon Rim is actually the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. The largest stand of Ponderosa pines in the United States can be found in this rim area with an average elevation about 7000 feet.
Damming small canyons that drain from the Mogollon Rim, lakes were created, hence the name, Rim Lakes Recreation Area. Tucked throughout the forest, these lakes, while not overly large, are very scenic and can be accessed quite easily. Woods Canyon Lake is by far the most popular among campers and fishermen. A general store and several additional campgrounds are located near the lake.
