Due to the devastating path of the monstrous Wallow Fire, many people have wondered, or received inaccurate information regarding the status of Big Lake Recreation Area and its campgrounds. We wanted to share the following pictures with the public. These were taken during the period of May 27, 2011 up to June 16, 2011. The actual campground pictures are from June 13th and 16th, so you can see how untouched most of it is. As we get more updated pictures of the area, we will continue to post them here and on our Facebook page.
As you can see, while the Big Lake Area was right in the Wallow Fire's path, the amazing work of the firefighting crews saved most of these campgrounds. One area that did not survive untouched was the East Fork area, but there is hope! East Fork isn't as bad as we first thought. It is burned in there, and there are some bad spots, but it's not totally destroyed. Not sure if it will be open at all this year due to public safety; we will have to wait until we get the all clear from the Forest Service. As more information becomes available, we will post it.
Please continue to check our site for updates. Thank you to all the people who worked so hard to help save the Big Lake area and its campgrounds. We are forever grateful.
